How to sew a medical mask from a fabric with your own hands
From the first days of quarantine, the search for medical masks in pharmacies has become a difficult test. Moreover, this trend is observed throughout the world. Over the years of normal operation, production simply cannot cope with such volumes. Fortunately, you can sew a good fabric mask with your own hands at home. We tell you how!
Regardless of the shape, thickness and material of the mask, it must completely cover the nose and mouth. If you know how to take measurements well, calculate it individually for yourself and the household. And if not, then focus on the standard: 17.5x9.5 cm for adults and 14x8 cm for children.
What fabric to choose
The texture and type of fabric for sewing the mask does not matter. But it should be exclusively natural material - cotton or linen. Calico, calico and similar fabrics are perfect - they will definitely be found in your home in the form of unnecessary pillowcases or old t-shirts.
Although synthetics are more durable and better able to withstand constant washing, it is not suitable for sewing masks. The fact is that a natural fabric allows air to pass through and allows you to breathe normally, while under the synthetics, a greenhouse effect is created - an ideal environment for the reproduction of bacteria.
Medical mask made of fabric. Method number 1
This is a very comfortable mask without folds, which fits snugly to the face thanks to a tuck and elastic band around the perimeter. You can take easily stretching fabric - and then it will sit even better.
You will need: 2 cuts of fabric 20x12.5 cm, elastic rubber, needle, thread, scissors.
How to stitch: Fold both fabric blanks together, then - in half, and again in half. Round off one corner and the long side a little, put both parts apart and pin them together with pins. Mark the middle of the workpiece and the sewn on both sides of the cuts of elastic tape about 8.5 cm long. Fold it in half, closing the fabric section so that the edges do not crumble.
Cut a large piece of the same tape about 64 cm long and use the same principle of sheathing the long sides of the workpiece. Loops will remain on the sides, which will be the ears of the mask. On the front of the chin, make a large tuck of 2.5x2 cm so that the mask fits snugly to the face.

This is a beautiful mask of two large parts, for which bright and colorful fabrics are ideal. And you can make it monophonic, and then draw funny faces or patterns with special paints.
You will need: Cut of dense fabric 30x30 cm, hat gum, needle, thread, scissors.
How to stitch: Make a stencil from a rectangle of paper 14x12 cm - a detailed diagram with all the measurements you will find in the video. Gently rounded all the corners of the mask so that it snugly and neatly fit to the face. Cut four identical parts from the fabric without additional allowances.
Fold the parts face to face and sew them together on the convex side with an allowance of 0.5 cm. Smooth the seams in two directions in both blanks and, if desired, fasten with a finishing stitch. Connect the parts and ask all the parts, leaving only one side open for eversion. Turn the mask face out and carefully smooth out all the seams and corners with your fingers.
To ensure that the mask is neater and does not fidget, smooth the folds well and skip the finishing line along the entire perimeter. Iron the sides to the inside by 1.5 cm, sew and insert the ears of a gum 25 cm long there. Tie the gum edges in a knot and sweep them inside the drawstring so that they do not interfere.

If you have a small piece of fabric with a bright print, then this is not only a functional mask, but also a stylish mask! An inconspicuous pocket will remain inside to insert a protective filter into it. Any non-woven material, such as household napkins, is suitable for this.
You will need: 1 section of facial tissue 24x19 cm, 2 cuts of the wrong fabric 18x13 cm, needle, thread, scissors.
How to stitch: Take the wrong cuts, tuck the long edges inward and iron with an iron. Spread both blanks over a large section of the facial tissue so that you get a valve. Stitch the parts above and below, unfold the workpiece and iron again.
On the front side, form three uniform folds, iron and sew on the sides so as not to affect the valve. Twist the sides and stitches around the edge twice. Using a pin, draw a thin elastic band into the resulting drawstring, tie with knots and hide them inside.

A very light reusable fabric mask can be sewn in literally 10-15 minutes. A form-resistant elastic fabric, in which the edges do not open, is perfect for this. For example, breathing neoprene, because it is made of beautiful and concise masks with "ears".
You will need: Neoprene cut, needle, thread, scissors.
How to stitch: If you have an unnecessary pharmacy mask, use it instead of a stencil. So you do not have to spend time on measurements and patterns. Transfer it to a double-folded fabric, but bring the side lines further and draw a loop for the ears.
Carefully cut out the details, cut in half and cut the earloops. Use sharp sewing scissors to trim all edges and both of the parts in the middle with a small allowance. You can leave the workpiece whole and not cut it, but a mask with a seam will sit better in the shape of a face!
How to wear a fabric mask?
Fabric masks are reusable, so they can and should be washed, unlike disposable pharmacy. You can throw them into the machine or wash them manually in hot water and soap. It will be useful to prophylactically treat them with alcohol, but the main thing is to thoroughly dry them before next use.
Wash and sanitize your hands before putting on the mask on your face. Hold it only by the “ears”, do not touch it on your face and constantly change every 2-4 hours. Put the used masks in a separate bag and wash them separately so that all bacteria and viruses on the front side do not come into contact with other things.
